Dear God:
Today, I am thankful for silver linings.
Barn's burnt down --
now
I can see the moon.
~ Mizuta Masahide (1657? - 1723)
(In 1688 Masahide's house burnt down, prompting him to write his most famous haiku.)
Many years ago, confronted by difficult professional and personal issues, I sought help from a therapist. One of her lasting gifts to me was this variation of Masahide's famous haiku: My barn burned down. Now I can see the moon.
For years, I posted the saying in my office - a timely reminder that my greatest challenges have silver linings and golden opportunities.
For this blessing, I am grateful.
Amen.
