Monday, 28 May 2007 - Memorial Day

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for Memorial Day.

Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,

Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Forgive me for neglecting to honor the men and women who died to preserve our freedom.
I know that one solemn minute of silence on this beautiful spring day isn't enough.
I know that a prayer each morning isn't enough.

I grieve the fact that my niece, who graduates from high school in a few days, will know someone who will die in a foreign war - most likely in Iraq or Afghanistan.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.
