Monday, 31 October 2005 - Honey crisp apples

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for honey crisp apples.

They are my very favorite eating apples, organically grown in Paonia by Austin Farms. Because they are early season apples, they must survive autumn's initial hard frosts and hail. This year, a hail storm damaged most of the crop. Still, I managed to buy about 10 pounds one week - just about all that the grower could salvage. He says that the rest will be pressed into cider (which I also buy).

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Sunday, 30 October 2005 - Hot apple cider

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a mug of hot apple cider.

I am an apple juice/cider drinker. I usually buy juice made from Colorado apples grown by Austin Farms, an organic farm in Paonia. This morning, to ward off the cold, I pour some cider into a pot, add a sprinkle of cinnamon, and heat the liquid over low heat. The spicy aroma fills the house - smells better than scented candles.

I pour the hot beverage into my favorite insulated mug - the one with the very tight lid. I savor the tart apple and cinnamon flavors all morning, taking small sips through a straw so I won't burn my mouth and to ensure that this calming beverage lasts a very long time.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Saturday, 29 October 2005 - Extra hour of knitting

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for tonight's extra hour of knitting!

I've become a night owl - watching movies on TCM and knitting well past midnight. My "just one more row" plea at bedtime often becomes another hour of working on my project. So, with the end of daylight's savings time tonight, I'll get to "fall back" and knit an extra hour without penalty.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Friday, 28 October 2005 - Sense of accomplishment

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a sense of accomplishment.

Whew! I just finished part one of the Internet project for my client - was a difficult task since I had to develop a company profile/story from very few source documents. I think the text reads very well. Now, on to part two and new writing challenges.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Thursday, 27 October 2005 - Wool sweaters

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for my collection of wool sweaters.

I base most of my fashion sense on what doesn't itch. ~Gilda Radner

When I lived in cities with milder winters, I longed to wear stylish heavy wool coats and hand-knitted sweaters and scarves of alpaca, cashmere, mohair and angora. My wish came true when we moved to Colorado in late February 1987.

With our 19th winter looming, I'm happy to see my favorite wool sweaters hanging in the closet, ready to keep me warm when the temperatures approach single digits and we can't justify turning up the thermostat.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Wednesday, 26 October 2005 - Rosa Parks

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for Rosa Parks.

Courage.
Humility.
Inspiration.

She changed the world simply by doing what she believed to be the right thing. All in the name of human decency ... with libery and justice for all.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Tuesday, 25 October 2005 - A good idea

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a good idea (well, I thought it was good).

A half-baked idea is okay as long as it's in the oven. ~Author Unknown

As a marketing communications consultant, I often try out new ways to present information to my clients' customers. Sometimes the new idea works; sometimes it doesn't. When it does, I get five stars by my name; when it doesn't, I learn something new about the world.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Monday, 24 October 2005 - A decent paycheck

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a decent paycheck.

My husband set the precedent when he started our consulting business. As a result, my hourly fee for my marketing communications work earns me a decent paycheck. I guess my nearly 25 years of experience in the corporate world should be worth something to someone.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Sunday, 23 October 2005 - Bags and bags of leaves

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for bags and bags of leaves.

Since we only grow evergreen trees on our property, I ask neighbors with deciduous trees to save the leaves for me. On Saturday, the neighbor boys raked leaves and gave me the proceeds (15 bags) for my garden. Now my plants rest quietly under a thick blanket of leaves - a good thing since the nightime temperatures consistently drop to below freezing.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Saturday, 22 October 2005 - Bike swap

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for the annual bike swap in Denver.

My husband, S, and his cycling buddies have anticipated this event for months. All summer long, they've added items to their wish lists. This year, S is also looking for parts for the bikes owned by the neighborhood boys. He has become the local "bike man" to many of the young cyclists.

The swap is the cyclist's equivalent of my favorite consignment and Ebay stores rolled into one. Not quite heaven on earth, but close!

My husband and his friends left early this morning for Denver, hoping to be among the first to inspect the merchandise. I hope that they each find the things they need the most at bargain basement prices.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Friday, 21 October 2005 - "New" laptop computer

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a "new" laptop computer.

My husband's main client gave him a new HP laptop so I inherited his old Dell. It's slightly used (my husband takes good care of his electronic toys) and much better than the older Toshiba laptop that's been my daily companion since 2001. I use the Dell for my consulting assignments but return to the Toshiba when I work on personal stuff like my book and new poems.

For this unexpected blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Thursday, 20 September 2005 - Words that describe me

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for words that describe who I am.

I need a break from my writing assignment. So, I decide to visit artella.com and see what's new. As I browse the online gift store, I find a collage with these words:

Poet
Teacher
Healer
Creator
Toucher of souls

They are the same words I use to describe myself to others.

How strange. How wonderful. How delightful.

Someone I don't even know, knows me.

Another serendipity. While casually looking for nothing in particular, I find a life-enhancing treasure. Wow!

And, yes, I bought the piece. I'm 100% positive that the artist created it just for me. Let's consider it an early Christmas present.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Wednesday, 19 October 2005 - Safe homecoming

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for my husband's safe homecoming.

After a missed connection in Las Vegas, TREX detours on I25, and poor visibility due to fog, my husband finally made it home from his business trip to Santa Clara, CA.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Tuesday, 18 October 2005 - "C" in PE

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for the "C" in physical education that my first grade teacher gave me. It's one of the key events of my life.

As a result of this distasteful event (I was an A student in all other subjects), I vowed to earn only A's in PE from that day forward (a goal that I achieved). And, although I didn't know it then, I was embarking on my life's uncertain journey as a bonafide health nut!

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Monday, 17 October 2005 - Picture perfect day

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for the bluest sky and the whitest clouds.

They greet T and me as we circle the park three times during our early morning jaunt.

Yes, it's a spectacular picture perfect day.
Yes, I remember why we call Colorado home.
Yes, heaven on earth exists, if only for one day.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Sunday, 16 October 2005 - Three wishes for boxing

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a fair fight, unbiased judges and an noncontroversial outcome.

Actually, I am speaking into existence my three wishes for professional boxing. However, after watching last night's Contender rematches on ESPN, my brain tells me that the powers that be won't fulfill my wishes anytime soon. How my heart aches for this once great and noble sport.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Saturday, 15 October 2005 - Organized kitchen cabinets

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for organized kitchen cabinets.

I spent the morning completing this dreaded chore. Finally, I can find what I need without digging through or rearranging 100 different items!

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Friday, 14 October 2005 - The trail's last summer

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for the trail's last summer.

They've started construction work again near the trail - have been cutting down scrub oak all week. We're very sad. We all knew that the past summer was our last to enjoy the trail and the surrounding open space. We just didn't want to accept the reality of losing this neighborhood treasure.

Damn the greedy developers and city council members who allowed this horror to befall our neighborhood!

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Thursday, 13 October 2005 - Epsom salts, olive oil and grapefruit juice

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for Epsom salts (the type you can ingest), olive oil (preferably organic) and grapefuit juice (organic, fresh-squeezed; ruby red varieties are best).

These are the simple ingredients that one uses for a liver and ball bladder flush. Tonight's the night - my body's telling me that I'm overdue for a good internal cleansing.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Wednesday, 12 October 2005 - My hands

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for my hands.

They're loyal, hardworking and talented. In fact, nearly all of my daily activities require dexterity - typing, knitting, writing, sewing, weeding, exercising, chopping/dicing/slicing food, eating, drinking, driving, holding T's leash ...

So, at age 51, I feel very fortunate to have strong, healthy, graceful hands that still move quickly and precisely when commanded and that wear my favorite rings with elegance and flair.

For this blessing, I am very grateful.

Amen.

Tuesday, 11 October 2005 - Life's possibilities

Dear God:

Today I am thankful for life’s possibilities.

As I check the weather report for the tenth time this morning (a habit I acquired after living just a few weeks in Colorado), the following words jump out at me: Visibility: Unlimited.

I know that the words refer to the degree of the sky's haziness, but somehow, they mean more to me this morning.

Yes, it's a beautiful, clear morning. The kind of morning that always follows a severe winter storm. The kind of morning that makes one elated to be alive. The kind of morning that makes me glad that I did not venture out into yesterday's nasty blizzard (except to walk, T, of course).

So, this morning, as T and I walk briskly in the park, I look all around me – sky, setting moon, mountain, foothill, valley, grass, houses, trees, meadow, rising sun, birds – yes, I have unlimited visibility this hour.

But there’s more. Much more.

Epiphany: my life has unlimited possibilities, even at my age (well, maybe 51 isn’t that old).

People say this all the time, but it usually goes in one ear and out the other. The words must touch your heart and soul before you can claim it as your destiny. That is what has happened to me. I now own unlimited possibilities.

My mind quickly lists all the things I want to do, need to do, should do, could do. Each “thing” requires a bit of me – an idea, dream, talent, passion, word, recipe, memory, weakness, experience, song, heartbeat, prayer – something that only I can provide.

The scary thing is that each one is doable. I'm no longer in the "getting ready to do it" mode - the final countdown has begun and lift-off is iminent.

Visibility: Unlimited
Life’s possibilities: Endless

I think I’ll sit awhile on the park bench and contemplate the future.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Sunday, 9 October 2005 - Two things that begin with "S"

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for two most wonderful things that begin with the letter "S": my loving husband, S, on the occasion of his 56th birthday and the first snowfall of the season.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Saturday, 8 October 2005 - One final summer day

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for one final summer day.

This morning, as I fertilize the plants in my xeriscape garden, Jordan and his brother, James, rake leaves in a neighbor's yard. (Jordan is the talented young man who wants to attend UCLA, my alma mater.) They'll bag the leaves for us - we'll feed them to our compost heap. My husband, S, is in the garage working on Jamell's bicycle. T, our chocolate Lab, rests quietly in the shade, observing my every move.

Whew! Hot and dry weather. Feels like summer though it's October. I pause often to wipe the sweat from my brow and to drink water.

Unfortunately, these halcyon days won't last another week. Tonight, we're expecting a wintry storm front that, after settling in, may bring rain and snow. In the meantime, S will take one more long bike ride this afternoon while I tidy the backyard garden.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Friday, 7 October 2005 - Local herb store

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for the local herb store where I buy the ingredients for my custom blended herbal concoctions. And yes - herbal remedies work (for me, at least).

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Thursday, 6 October 2005 - A busy kitchen

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a busy kitchen.

It's quite cold today! The forecast calls for the first hard frost of the season tonight. Brrrrrrr.

To battle the cold, I cook. The oven heats the kitchen and the activity warms my bones. My green chile casserole (made with fresh, locally grown roasted organic chilis) bubbles briskly as it bakes, whetting our appetites with its smoky aroma.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Wednesday, 5 October 2005: Elizabeth

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for my niece, Elizabeth (1990-1993).

Serene grace.
Quiet knowing.
Mellow temper.
Gentle spirit.
Busy mind.
Fragile body.
Glowing heart.

Steel soul.
Delicate dream.
Words fail me here.

If you only knew
Her loveliness.

In memoriam with much love, an ocean of tears and a wistful heart.

For this blessing, I am very grateful.

Amen.

Monday, 4 October 2005 - Brilliant fall colors

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for brilliant fall colors.

Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all. ~Stanley Horowitz

No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace
As I have seen in one autumnal face.
~John Donne

As I gaze out my studio's third story window, I see the rolling foothills that rise to become the mountains. The recent cold weather has accelerated the color changes in the landscape - summer's enduring greens and tans are now vibrant rusts, golds and oranges.

Lovely.
Breathtaking at times.
Divine.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Monday, 3 October 2005 - A new work assignment

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a new work assignment.

A client gave me the go ahead to revamp the company website so I'm busy doing what I do best - helping people communicate with their customers!

For this blessing, I am very grateful.

Sunday, 2 October 2005 - A good sweat

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for a good sweat brought about by good physical work.

Nobody ever drowned in his own sweat. ~Ann Landers

I spent the morning working in the garden - watering, spraying, trimming and mulching the plants. The sun was quite hot for fall - I think the high reached over 80 degrees F today.

Anyway, I worked up a good sweat carrying and dumping buckets of pine mulch here and there before crouching and smoothing the mulch around the base of each plant. T, our chocolate Lab and my constant companion, lay quietly in the shade, watching my every movement. He definitely preferred the role of spectator.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen.

Saturday, 1 October 2005 - Parisian memories

Dear God:

Today, I am thankful for memories of the 2005 Tour de France, Lance Armstrong and Paris.

Last July, my husband's cycling partner went to France to witness Lance Armstrong's final Tour de France race. Tonight, he invited several of us to his home for dinner and to view the slide show of his adventure.

Now, I really, really, really love Paris (actually, j'aime all things French) so when pictures of the City of Lights appeared, my heart skipped a beat and sighed heavily. They say that happiness is walking in Paris in very special shoes. I've got the shoes. All I need is Paris.

For this blessing, I am grateful.

Amen
